Redirect & Broken Link Checker
Every redirect hop costs latency, and internal links pointing through redirects leak the signals that should have reached the destination directly. Broken internal links waste crawl budget outright. This check follows a sample of internal links and reports the ones that do not resolve in a single hop.
Results open in the site's full report, which you can share, compare and re-run.
What it checks
- Internal links returning a 4xx or 5xx status
- Links that redirect, with the final destination and the number of hops
- Whether plain HTTP redirects to HTTPS in one hop
- Pages in the sample that return an error instead of HTML
Frequently asked questions
- Why do redirect chains matter if the page still loads?
- Each hop adds a round trip before anything renders, and crawlers limit how many they will follow. Collapsing a chain to one hop is usually a config change with no downside.
- Should internal links point at the final URL?
- Yes. A redirect is for external links and old bookmarks you do not control. Your own links should go straight to the canonical URL.
- What is checked exactly?
- Up to twenty internal links beyond the sampled pages, fetched with HEAD where the server allows it. It is a sample, not an exhaustive link audit.
- Is a 302 worse than a 301?
- For a permanent move, yes — a 302 tells engines to keep the original URL indexed. Use 301 or 308 when the change is permanent.
