Duplicate Title & Description Checker

Duplicate titles and descriptions across a template are the most common on-page problem on real sites, and they are invisible page by page — you only see them by comparing pages. This check compares a sample of pages and reports repeats, omissions and lengths that will be truncated in results.

Results open in the site's full report, which you can share, compare and re-run.

What it checks

  • Titles repeated across more than one checked page
  • Meta descriptions repeated across more than one checked page
  • Missing or empty titles and meta descriptions
  • Titles under 15 or over 65 characters, and descriptions under 50 or over 160

Frequently asked questions

Is duplicate content penalized?
There is no duplicate content penalty. What happens is dilution: engines pick one URL to index and your signals spread across the variants instead of consolidating on one.
Do meta descriptions affect ranking?
No. They affect click-through, because they usually become the snippet. Engines rewrite them when they judge the page content a better match for the query.
What length should a title be?
Long enough to be descriptive, short enough not to be cut off — roughly 15 to 65 characters. The real limit is pixel width, so the character count is a guide rather than a rule.
Why does the check only look at some pages?
It compares up to twelve same-origin HTML pages found from the sitemap and homepage links. A template-wide duplicate shows up immediately in that sample; a rare one-off may not.
